That "smooth" and "affordable" synthetic underwear might be costing you more than you think. Here's what science says about synthetic fibers.
1. Moisture Trapping
According to Healthline, synthetic materials like nylon and spandex "trap heat and moisture," which "may lead to odor and increase the risk of yeast infections" ("8 Underwear Tips").
2. Chemical Exposure
CHEM Trust found that "underwear with a higher percentage of cotton is less likely to contain bisphenols" (chemicals that disrupt hormones) regardless of brand (CHEM Trust).
3. Skin Irritation & Allergies
NBC Select reports that "one of the most common risks is skin irritation" from chemicals commonly found in underwear (NBC Select). Synthetic fabrics can cause contact dermatitis.
4. Microplastics
CEDR Clothing states that "human sweat leaches toxic chemicals from microplastics in synthetic fabrics" (CEDR). Another study shows that "8% of flame-retardant chemicals absorbed through skin in 24 hours" (CEDR).
5. pH Balance Disruption
According to Panty Promise, "synthetic fabrics, such as polyester, nylon, and spandex, can disrupt vaginal pH balance," leading to infections (Panty Promise).
The Bottom Line
Switching to natural fiber underwear is one of the simplest ways to protect your health. Your sensitive areas deserve better than plastic-based fabrics.
